Official Retrospective of Cuban Music (compilation set)
Presented by The Center for the Investigation & Development of Cuban Music, Havana, Cuba (C.I.D.M.U.C.)
(Tonga)
This 4 CD anthology of Cuban music produced in part with the cooperation of the Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music features the roots and origins of many of the wonderful rhythms and genres native to the largest of the Caribbean islands. The compilation is divided in four volumes: Música Afrocubana y Rumba, Sones y Guarachas, Punto Cubano y Canción, and El Danzón y la Música Tradicional Actual. Completing the set is an English/Spanish booklet containing compelling research information from the archives of this organization on the evolution of Cuban music. Perhaps one important fact about this production is that the research done actually rescued the work of many groups and artists from Cuba who were not yet introduced to audiences abroad. The music compiled spans the realm of religious ritual drumming and chants to trio and solo interpretations as well as those of conjuntos and other formats of Cuban music. This 4-CD set is an excellent addition to any existing musical collection and a good representation of the folkloric and popular music of Cuba.
