Latin Beat Magazine, Dec, 1997 by Rudy Mangual
Manny Patiño and Jorge Moreno
Compiled by two excellent Latin music professional musicians -- Manny Patiño and Jorge Moreno -- Afro-Cuban Bass Grooves & Afro-Cuban Keyboard Grooves are matching books designed to help you unlock the secrets of the Afro-Cuban rhythmic feel for bass and keyboard. They provide a solid understanding of the function of both the bass and the piano within popular Latin music. Both books start with complete explanations of the clave (the underlying rhythmic pattern) and tumbaos (the comping - rhythm patterns played over the clave) plus numerous demonstrations and play-along tracks covering all the fundamental Afro-Cuban rhythms. The matching books (bass/keyboard) further illustrate the interdependent relationship of the bass and the keyboard in Latin music. Some of the rhythms included are mambo, salsa, cha-cha-cha, merengue, Latin jazz and many more. Explanations of notations and tablature are also included plus Latin Intros and Endings. Both books include a CD with helpful examples.
