GRUPOMANIA

(Sony Tropical)

Representing the current state of the merengue in Puerto Rico is the band Grupomania. The rhythm of the merengue, which Puerto Rico has adopted from their Dominican neighbors for quite some time now, has become the dance of choice for the youth on the island. Grupomania is one of the principal groups who has capitalized on this new musical movement. Perhaps what sets apart Grupomania from the rest is their unique blend of merengue styles with contemporary dance and pop music, molding together a new fresh sound which seems to appeal to the young dance masses. The singing quartet of young merengueros includes Oscar Serrano, Banchy Serrano, Alfred Cotto, and Elvis Crespo. Together with an excellent 10-piece orchestra of young musicians, Grupomanía is the hottest act on the island and in the airwaves as their songs climb the charts. As common as the kids next door, Grupomania is definitely "de moda."
