Light tower designed for compact applications - Construction Equipment - Wacker Corp

Diesel Progress North American Edition, Jan, 2003

Wacker has introduced a new compact model to its light tower lineup. The LTC 4L light tower is designed and built to allow one person set-up and operation in construction, commercial and industrial applications or wherever reliable portable lighting is required.

The LTC 4L light tower is powered by a 0.9 L, three-cylinder Lombardini LDW903 liquid-cooled diesel engine rated 12.1 hp at 1800 rpm. This marks the first application of a Lombardini engine in a Wacker light tower. The engine features an automatic shutdown system in the event of low oil pressure or high coolant temperature. The engine also includes a glow plug preheat system for improved cold weather starting.

Directly coupled to the engine is a Mecc Alte 60 Hz brushless generator rated 6 kW, 50 amps at 120 V. The generator provides power for the LTC 4L's four 1000 W metal halide lamps that provide five to seven acres of lighting coverage, plus 2000 W of auxiliary power. The unit is designed for quiet operation and has a noise emissions rating of 71 dB(A).

The quick disconnect lamp fixtures allow for easy removal during transport. The mast can be raised 30 ft. and can be rotated 3600 to allow for the lights to be adjusted while the mast is raised. The mast section, tower swivel base and lamp mounting bar are all zinc dichromate coated for improved corrosion resistance.

The light tower's control panel features an hourmeter and 120 V GFCI receptacle with circuit breakers for additional accessory power. A separate engine control panel features both start and run fault indicator lights for simple diagnostics and operator convenience.

Features of the tower include a lightweight narrow body that measures only 48 in. wide. In addition to easier jobsite maneuverability and placement in tight areas, the compact size of the light tower is an advantage during shipping, Wacker noted. The small footprint allows up to 10 units to ship on a full size trailer, thus saving on transportation costs.

The unit also features a lockable, weather-protected powder-coated steel enclosure to protect components form the outside elements. Built-in forklift pockets and lifting eye provide balanced lifting with the tower in a lowered and locked position. Four 2000 lb. rated leveling jacks are designed to offer easy leveling and stability on uneven terrain and in high wind conditions.

The fully equipped highway-ready trailer has 13 in. diameter wheels, four tie downs, DOT approved lighting, a vehicle identification number, chains and a 2 in. ball hitch. The 30 gal. fuel tank provides up to 68 hours of continuous lighting/runtime. Every model includes a free 1000 hour engine maintenance pack, Wacker said.
