Zenith receives CARB certification for Nissan engines - industry news - Zenith Power Products L.L.C

Diesel Progress North American Edition, Jan, 2004 by Mike Osenga

As the LSI (large spark-ignited) engine and equipment markets closed in on its January 1, 2004, Tier 2 emissions regulations, Zenith Power Products LLC announced it has received Executive Orders from the Air Resources Board of the California Environmental Protection Agency for four Nissan engines.

The Executive Orders are official recognition that the engines are certified for use in off-road equipment. Zenith said the Executive Orders were received for the Nissan 1.3 L model CG13; the 1.5 L model A15; the 2.0 L model H20; and the 2.5 L model H25 for the model year 2004.

The engines have attained certification on various fuels, including gasoline, LPG and dual fuel--gasoline/LPG for use in generators, tractors, chippers, welders and other "pre-empted equipment," Zenith Power Products LLC, Bristol, Va., said. The Executive Orders list a 3500-hour durability level and show that all engines have a closed crankcase and are certified with throttle body fuel injection, three-way catalytic converter and heated oxygen sensor.

Zenith said these certification levels provide the OEM manufacturers "a substantial safety factor" in regards to emissions regulations. All emissions certification was obtained using either the ZEEMS I or ZEEMS II electronic fuel injection systems manufactured by Zenith Fuel Systems LLC and a catalyst from DCL International Inc.

The LSI regulations require that engines in this category meet a 3.0 g/bhp-hr HC N[O.sub.x] standard as well as a 37.0 g/bhp-hr CO level. According to the executive orders, the Nissan CG13 had certification levels of 1.8 (HC N[O.sub.x]) and 2.1 g/bhp-hr (CO). The engine is rated 46 hp with gasoline, 45 hp for LPG and 46 hp as a dual-fuel engine.

Certifications levels for the A15 were 1.6 g/bhp-hr and 4.8 g/bhp-hr respectively with ratings of 50 hp (gasoline), 47 hp (LPG) and 50 hp dual fuel. The H20 was certified at 2.0 g/bhp-hr and 8.0 g/bhp-hr with ratings of 51 hp on gasoline and dual fuel, and 46 hp for LPG. The H25 has ratings of 66 hp for gasoline and on dual furl and 64 hp as an LPG engine. The H25 was certified to 2.4 g/bhp-hr HC N[O.sub.x] and 6.8 g/bhp-hr CO.

Zenith Power Products LLC, (ZPP) was formed in June 2003, as a wholly-owned subsidiary by Precision Aerospace Corp. At that time Zenith Power Products was named the master distributor of Nissan spark-ignited, industrial engines for the United States and Canada. ZPP is responsible for the emissions certification of the current Nissan industrial engine line, as well as assuming the role of MOR (manufacturer of record) for both EPA and CARB compliance.

The new company is dedicated to the sales, engineering and service support of the emissionized Nissan engine package. Ray Prussing is director of sales for the new company and Otto Aliffi is national sales manager.

The certified engine packages used the Zenith Electronic Engine Management Systems (ZEEMS I or ZEEMS II) to attain emissions compliance. Zenith Fuel Systems has been a manufacturer of industrial fuel delivery systems and engine emissions certification technology since 1911.
