Heat exchanger manufacturer expands into U.S. cogen market

Diesel Progress North American Edition, May, 2004 by Dawn M. Geske

Heat exchanger and oil cooler manufacturer E.J. Bowman Ltd., Birmingham, U.K., has expanded into the U.S. cogeneration market following the purchase of its exhaust gas heat exchangers by two Indianapolis, Ind., combined heat and power (CHP) generator manufacturers. Both companies sell CHP generators to customers in a variety of industries where the hot water is used for a range of applications such as industrial processes or building and water supply heating.

E.J. Bowman's market shift follows a recent sales drive focusing on the U.S. region and its debut at the Power Gen International Show, the company said. Prior to this, its highest concentration of product sales was in industrial hydraulics and marine markets, but recent environmental awareness and energy shortages have created rising interest in cogeneration. By removing waste heat from exhaust gas and transferring it to the water circuit for heating, E.J. Bowman's exhaust gas heat exchangers are able to support cogeneration processes up to 700 kW, the company said.

The tubes, tube plates and body of the Bowman exhaust gas heat exchanger are constructed of 316 L stainless steel with cast iron end covers that allow use with biogas, diesel gases and natural gases. The exhaust gas heat exchangers can be used for heat recovery, the company said and they can also reduce exhaust temperature in engine operation in hazardous environments where for safety reasons it is necessary to reduce the temperature of the exhaust gases.

E.J. Bowman has been manufacturing heat exchangers and oil coolers since 1919 from its Birmingham facility. To date, it exports over 50% of its production worldwide. Its U.S. customers can also choose to buy from local U.S. distributors.

While the U.K. company is looking to expand its sales of exhaust gas heat exchangers based on the popularity of cogeneration, it continuos to produce a variety of heat exchangers for other cooling applications. It manufactures heat exchangers that can be used on marine engines, generator sets, fire pumps and engine testing equipment. Also available from E.J. Bowman is a range of oil coolers for engines, transmissions and hydraulic equipment.
