Sun Microsystems Leads Consumers On A Networked Journey At Consumer Electronics Show - Company Business and Marketing

EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, Jan 8, 2001

Leading consumers on a journey through the connected lifestyle, Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) will showcase a series of Java technology-based products for home, travel and play at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The Connected Lifestyle showcase (Rm. N235, 2nd level, Las Vegas Convention Center) will demonstrate the growing breadth of products and services that will enable consumers to simplify, enrich, and entertain their lives.

Expanding on last year's launch of the dot.com home at CES, the demonstrations will focus on the benefits of networked solutions that span a wide range of products and services that people use in everyday life. From networked appliances that download the latest recipes, to monitoring your home while traveling, to experiencing new and interactive services with your television, to creating a photo album on a CD-ROM without a PC -- these solutions are expected to revolutionize the people's lives at home, travel and play.

"Sun is extending its vision for network services to focus on the individual by providing an end-to-end user experience that is compatible and consistent everywhere we go," said Patricia C Sueltz, executive vice president, Sun's Software Systems Group. "We see Java technology targeting the connected consumer to support a whole series of next-generation, intelligent services that run across the entire spectrum of modern clients. Java technology is in a unique position to support services that work on multiple systems and multiple clients, which is key for the next-generation of consumer services and products."

Sun will demonstrate numerous everyday appliances, products, technologies and services all developed with the Java platform. Sun's Connected Lifestyle showcase will include participation from leading players in the wireless, interactive television, home gateway, video editing, white appliance and consumer electronics industries. Companies developing products and services with Java technology on display in the Connected Lifestyle room will include SNAP2 demonstrating an interactive television solution and devices from Siemens, Sony, Maytag, Sega and Palm.
