'Code Red' Awakens: Everything Seems Alright - Industry Trend or Event - Brief Article

EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, August 6, 2001

Reuters has reported that security experts Tuesday saw no immediate effect on the Internet from the dreaded "Code Red" worm that was expected to have begun winding its way through Web servers in a renewed attack.

However, experts also cautioned that more time was needed to assess the impact of the worm's forecast outbreak, which had been expected to start as global clocks ticked over to midnight GMT, which was 8 p.m. EDT.

Keynote Systems Inc., which monitors traffic for Web sites, reported that Internet traffic appeared normal at a sample of the most-visited U.S. Web sites, including portals Yahoo, Google and Excite.

"If the proliferation of the worm and its resulting traffic was going to effect Internet performance it would surely be seen in these sites," Keynote spokeswoman Mary Lindsay said. "So I guess it remains to be seen...Everything is quiet."
