EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, Sept 1, 2003

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) has announced that the company grew its worldwide UNIX server leadership position in Q203, and increased its share of the overall worldwide server market (including servers running all types of operating systems), according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker (1), which was released recently.

Sun's UNIX server revenues accounted for 33 percent of all UNIX server factory revenues during the second quarter, ended June 30, 2003. In addition, Sun gained 1.6 points of market share and leads its nearest competitor, HP, in terms of UNIX server factory revenue during Q203. Significantly, Sun increased its share in the overall server market, holding a 13.5 percent share of worldwide factory revenues for servers, including servers running all types of operating systems, compared with a 12.8 percent share of the overall server market in the previous quarter, Q103.

"With these share gains customers have sent a clear signal that the innovation, choice and value Sun delivers matters to them," said Mark Tolliver, chief strategy officer and executive vice president for marketing & strategy, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "In the last quarter we continued to deliver servers with superior price/performance based on industry-leading SPARC and Solaris. We also offered more choice to our customers with systems based on Solaris for x86, Linux, and x86. This strategy is clearly the one customers want as Sun increased share in the UNIX market and across all servers running all types of operating systems."

"At Sun Network, Sept 16 through Sept 18, 2003, you will see us make a series of breakthrough announcements that will further our competitive edge while dramatically reducing our customers' cost and complexity," added Tolliver.

The SunNetwork 2003 Conference and Pavilion is the only conference 100 percent dedicated to showcasing end-to-end solutions from Sun and our iForce partners. SunNetwork 2003 will provide information and insights through more than 200 education and technical sessions about products and innovations designed to reduce the cost and complexity of network computing.%
