Fujitsu Licenses Arm Cores For Internet And Portable Multimedia Electronic Products - Fujitsu has licensed the ARM926EJ-S core and the ARM946E-S microprocessors
EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, Nov 26, 2001
ARM (LSE: ARM; Nasdaq: ARMHY), a provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC processor solutions, and Fujitsu Limited, a provider of Internet-based IT solutions, have announced that Fujitsu has licensed the ARM926EJ-S core and the ARM946E-S core for use in portable multimedia electronic products such as digital cameras, PDAs, next-generation mobile phones and Internet appliances.
Fujitsu licensed the ARM926EJ-S core and the ARM946E-S core to complement their earlier ARM7TDMI core license. The ARM926EJ-S core contains ARM Jazelle technology that will address market requirements for a combination of accelerated Java execution and the ability to run platform operating systems such as Symbian OS, microITRON, Windows CE, Linux and Palm in cellular handsets.
Additionally, the ARM946E-S core provides Fujitsu with a core that has been optimized for embedded control applications such as hard disk drives and MO disks. Both cores bring the benefit of the enhanced DSP instructions that are part of the ARMv5TE instruction set architecture. The ARM926EJ-S and the ARM946E-S cores are fully synthesizable, high-performance 32-bit RISC processors combining the ARM9EJ-S core and the ARM9E-S core with flexible instruction and data caches, tightly coupled memory interfaces, Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) interface and an AMBA AHB (Advanced High-Performance Bus) on-chip interconnect interface.
"With the rapid expansion of the wireless, network and multimedia appliance markets, we are seeing a lot of demand from our customers for system-on-chip (SoC) solutions integrating the low-power, high-performance ARM9 family of microprocessor cores," said Toshihiko Ono, Member of the Board, group executive VP, Electronic Devices Group, Fujitsu. "With Fujitsu's excellent development environment, packaging and process technologies, we believe that Fujitsu can provide optimum solutions for a broad range of customers within a short development time. With our license to the ARM926EJ-S and ARM946E-S cores, we will be able to address diverse markets such as mobile phones, PDAs, storage devices, printers and digital still cameras."
"Java is fast becoming a key technology for mobile devices. By licensing the ARM Jazelle technology, Fujitsu is gaining an important edge in the delivery of silicon that can provide the kind of Java performance that meet the needs of consumers without compromising battery life," said Steve Evans, VP, Segment Marketing, ARM. "By licensing both the ARM926EJ-S core and ARM946E-S core, Fujitsu will be able to provide leading-edge SoC solutions to their customers, while capitalizing on the high degree of commonality between both cores to enable significant design re-use to reduce development time and cost."
Fujitsu will offer advanced SoC devices using the ARM926EJ-S core in Q2 2002 and the ARM946E-S core in Q3 2002.
