EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, Dec 6, 1999

Dedicated, Shared, Wireless Access Services Based On Cisco 12000 Gigabit Switch Router

Big Herndon, Va.-based Internet services provider (ISP) PSINet and networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. are teaming up to offer a variety of secure, high-performance, dedicated Internet access services. The two firms will use intelligent broadband IP networking technology to deliver network-based applications to corporate and government customers.

Under Cisco's Powered Network Program, PSINet will include in its full service offerings to commercial end users dedicated, shared, and wireless access services based on the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Router (GSR).

"Cisco shares our vision that the IP network is the foundation for delivering intelligent business solutions, thus providing our customers with strategic competitive advantages," says William Opet, president of PSINet's Corporate Network Services. "By working with the worldwide leader in networking, the Internet services we offer to our customers will lead the industry in reliability, performance and innovation. In addition, the Cisco distribution channel of value-added resellers around the globe represent an opportunity for PSINet to accelerate growth through the sale of Cisco-certified equipment and PSINet services."

Unlike services that just provide access to the Internet, PSINet's services can directly connect a customer's LAN to PSINet's network via a dedicated, point-to-point circuit, providing better performance for mission-critical applications such as customer support, document management, research, intranets, VPNs and WANs.
