OPNET models Cisco Mobile IP networks for the defense community
EDP Weekly's IT Monitor, Feb 3, 2003
OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPNT), a provider of Intelligent Network Management software, has announced completion of a mobile IP model, developed by OPNET and Cisco Systems, Inc.
The new model demonstrates features of Cisco's 3200 Series Mobile Access Router technology in operational network scenarios and supports mobile IP network planning for OPNET and Cisco customers. The new model is available to OPNET's customers as part of OPNET's IT Guru, Modeler, and SP Guru products.
The Cisco 3200 Series Mobile Access Router is optimized for mobile vehicular applications, which pioneer a shift in the way organizations communicate and share information across wireless networks.
The Cisco 3200 Series Mobile Access Router, with the Mobile IP and Mobile Networks functionality in Cisco IOS Software, offers secure data, voice and video communications, seamless mobility and interoperability for networks in motion--entire networks of communication devices in moving vehicles such as airplanes, ships, tanks and trains--and is designed for "always-on" connectivity.
OPNET's mobile IP model was designed to enhance the military's communications and operations infrastructure. The mobile IP model predicts the scalability and performance of specific Cisco Mobile IP deployments in brigade, battalion, and division scenarios.
Pradeep Singh, OPNET's senior vice president of Model R&D, stated, "Mobile IP brings us one step closer to having a ubiquitous wireless Internet. Our mobile IP model should play a meaningful role in deployment of this technology, both for Cisco's customers and ours. We have been working with Cisco for many years and together have successfully implemented models to prove the value of new technology in complex environments. This is a win-win."
James Massa, vice president, for Cisco Systems Global Defense and Space Group stated, "The OPNET modeling capability is important to us because it provides an opportunity for us to work closely with our customers to demonstrate Cisco Mobile Network features in their unique mission environments. The Cisco Mobile Networks features in Cisco IOS provide a unique mobile IP solution, which extends the edge of the IP network to vehicles. Demonstrating this via the OPNET model allows for more efficient deployment and management of mobile IP solutions. The Cisco IOS Mobile Network features are designed for incorporation into communications systems that are customized and installed by Cisco Defense and Space system integration partners."
