S/390 Linux Rescuer, for recovery in the event of a disaster, runs on a zSeries IBM eServer under a distributor's Linux disaster recovery facility. Employing that system's network communications and disk access, S/390 Linux Rescuer allows FDR/UPSTREAM to recover a user's entire system, including their Linux system boot disk, file systems, device drives as well as all their application program and data files. Available in February 2003, FDR/UPSTREAM 3.2.1, will include S/390 Linux Rescuer, as a stand alone system recovery facility for SuSE S/390 Linux systems running on IBM S/390 and zSeries eServers.
"S/390 Linux Rescuer, is one of the principle reasons Mainline chose FDR/UPSTREAM to be the business continuance component of our package solution for those organizations looking to roll out new Linux workloads or execute cost effective server consolidation strategies on the IBM zSeries eServer family of computers", said Rick Kearney CEO of Mainline Information Systems, a Premier IBM Business Partner providing processors, storage and software to customers nationwide.
"Adding S/390 Linux Rescuer to FDR/UPSTREAM complements an already extensive array of capabilities", says INNOVATION Vice President, Thomas J. Meehan, "a list that includes, UPSTREAM agents for non-disruptive online backup of all major databases, HSM file migration, file transfer between heterogeneous platforms and tape vaulting with centrally administered profile policy management for disaster protection to mention just a few of the features."
FDR/UPSTREAM 3.2.1 enhancements, in addition to S/390 Linux Rescuer, add support for file-level backup/restore of FIFO and device files, expanding the capability of UPSTREAM to protect all existing Linux file types including hard links, symbolic links, owners, single file systems, Reiser file systems as well as ext2, ext3, XFS and remote NFS attachments. UPSTREAM, with no additional setup or special consideration will transparently incorporate in every backup metadata on each file system, including file system demarcation points. Now even easier to use, a single specification can backup an entire system with record setting performance, while on zSeries IBM eServers FDR/UPSTREAM employs HiperSockets to further accelerate backup/restore throughput.
Employing an IBM S/390 and zSeries eServer as a backup server, FDR/UPSTREAM is a high performance enterprise-wide solution for managing corporate data distributed across a heterogeneous network on a variety of open system platforms including Windows, Linux, Novell, and UNIX servers as well as on workstations. UPSTREAM Director, an Explorer-like graphical Java interface provides operational and administrative management from virtually anywhere in the enterprise.
