Ask Mr. Style

Golf Digest, Nov, 2003 by Marty Hackel

What do you think about golfers who wear a long-sleeve turtleneck or a mock under their short-sleeve golf shirt?

Jeff Fulton, Los Angeles

From a style standpoint, it's not very neat. A turtleneck or mock is perfectly acceptable and shouldn't alarm the collar police. Some tour pros wear short-sleeve shirts over their turtlenecks in cold weather to make sure their sponsor logos are visible. For the rest of us, I recommend wearing a vest or windshirt for extra warmth.

Note: You can disregard this advice if you're 25 or younger.

Why can't rain pants be made to look and fit like real pants?

Andrew Martin, Houston

Actually, there are stylish waterproof trousers. Barbour makes an excellent one (www.barbour.com). Look for pants made with Ventile fabric, which is weatherproof. Consider purchasing pants separately from the jacket. You might be an XL on top and a L on bottom. Some rainwear makers have a special order department for custom sizes.
