September: Kids Rule!

Analysis by Shelby Futch

I've lost count of how many times I have turned back to the pages showing 8-year-old Alison Lee's incredible swing (right) to wonder how it is possible that a child so young can have what appears to be a mechanically perfect swing. I'd appreciate more information about her.

Alison's mother, Sung Kim-Lee, responds: Alison doesn't have a golf teacher, but her dad gives her a little lesson every weekend, and she watches The Golf Channel all the time. She likes playing golf with her friends and loves tournaments because she likes to collect different trophies.

Alison went to the Callaway Junior World tournament in San Diego this summer and won the 8-and-under division. She met lots of kids from all over the world and even exchanged addresses with them so they could write to each other. She wants to go back next year and try to win again, but it will be more difficult competing with older kids. This was a very good experience. She said this was the best summer she ever had.

I was excited to see the swing sequences of the winners of the Best Little Swings in America contest. The comments by Shelby Futch were very good. When instructing juniors, it's important to teach them good fundamentals. The correct equipment is also critical in developing the proper swing motion.
