Under the gun Sunday afternoon, final hole, '98 U.S. Open - Brief Article

Golf Digest, June, 1999

At this point, I didn't know if I was one stroke up or tied for the lead, and I didn't want to know. I wanted to play this last hole and then look. The crest of the hill was about 185 yards out, so all I needed was something that would fly 200 yards. I hit 3-iron, figuring it would roll down to where I could hit wedge, which it did (leading to a two-putt par).

I probably three-quartered it- there's less to go wrong with the swing and less chance it would go in the rough. It looks like I stayed on top of it pretty well; my left arm is straight, so everything cleared correctly at impact. The club is coming down the line, and it looks like the ball starts exactly where I was trying to hit it, at the left bunker, which is in line with the middle of the fairway. I usually tee it up a hair with a long iron, so it's like having a much better lie than you would normally have in the fairway.
