Rules Decision - identifying balls - Brief Article

Golf Digest, Jan, 2000

Question: A and B hit their tee shots into the same area. Because A and B were playing identical balls and neither had put an identification mark on the balls, they could not determine which ball was which. What is the ruling?

Answer: Since neither player could identify a ball as his or her ball, both balls were lost.
