Roll and bulge

Golf Digest, May, 1999

Correcting mis-hits

Roll and bulge were originally incorporated into the design of wood heads to maximize the gear effect: A ball that is hit on the toe will start off a bit farther right and then curve back toward the fairway. "Metal woods don't require as much roll and bulge as wood woods, because they don't twist as much on mis-hits, thus there is not as much gear effect to counteract," says Cobra's Clay Long, a member of Golf Digest's Technical Advisory Panel.
