The score

Still the worst

Fifteen years ago, we embarked on a mission to find the nation's Worst Avid Golfer. Our search produced 627 worthy nominees but only one really lousy champion. In June 1985, Angelo Spagnolo, then a 31-year-old grocer from Fayette City, Pa., shot 257 from the tips at the TPC at Sawgrass, worst by 49 shots. Spagnolo's scorecard remains the Mona Lisa of golfing futility. Now he plays 35 to 40 rounds a year, and his unofficial handicap is down to 28. He recently shot a sterling 104 at PGA West.
