The vanishing visor

Golf Digest, July, 2001 by Johnny Miller, Guy Yocom

Maybe you haven't noticed, but the visor is dying a slow death. A few tour players still wear them--Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Fred Couples come to mind--but baseball-style caps are much more in vogue. Too bad, I say.

In hot weather, a visor is cooler than a cap, because it doesn't trap the heat. Visors are lighter, there's no top to get squashed and rumpled, and only bald guys really need to worry about sunburn. And the visor just plain looks better. Maybe my attitude is a hangover from the 1970s, when a bunch of tour players wore the Amana caps with the super-high crown that resembled some type of papal headwear. A silly braid of rope was at the base of the crown. I called it the "rope on a pope" hat. Man, were they hideous.

Save the visor from extinction! Once you give one a try, I'll bet you won't go back.
