Why watch the ball?

Golf Digest, July, 2002 by Johnny Miller, Guy Yocom

With the U.S. Open returning to Long Island, I was thinking about the last Open held there and Corey Pavin's spectacular 4-wood shot to the final green at Shinnecock Hills in 1995. What remains steadfast in my mind is the way Pavin kept his head down through impact on that shot, not looking up until well after the ball was gone. It was one of Pavin's trademarks; he kept his head down longer than anyone I've ever seen.

Amateurs would do well to copy him. It does you no good to look up to see where the ball is going, and in fact can do you a lot of harm. When your head comes up, your upper body often comes up with it, and disaster results. Make a pledge never to look up until your hands are waist-high on the follow-through. 'I've yet to figure out why manufacturers put scoring lines on the face of a driver.'
