Leaders in the clubhouse - four golfers get eagle putts on one hole; a high school student breaks Sam Snead's 40-year-old course record at a North Carolina golf course - Brief Article

Golf Digest, Sept, 1999

Joe Noble, Charles Dial,
Coleman Williamson,
Dick Phillips

For a "can-you-top-this?" story, these four friends in the roofing business have a tale that's hard to beat. Playing their second shots on the 516-yard par-5 13th at Williamson's club, Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Dial hit a 3-iron to 18-feet; Williamson a 3-iron to 15 feet; Noble a 7-iron to 20 feet and Phillips a 7-iron to 14 inches. All four then sank their eagle putts. "I'd never heard of four eagles on one hole before," says Williamson. "I think it's pretty rare." We agree.

J.D. McNeil
Southern Pines, N.C.

Sam Snead has often bragged about owning more course records than any living legend. Thanks to McNeil, Slammin' Sam has one less. The high school senior shot a nine-under-par 62 at the 6,300-yard Southern Pines Elks Lodge and Golf Course to break Snead's mark set more than 40 years ago.
