Rear Admiral Peter A.C. Long, United States Navy, has been named president of Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Pennsylvania. He succeeded president Rear Admiral Virgil L. Hill, Jr., United States Navy (retired) who recently announced his retirement.

Long comes to VFMA & C with more than 30 years of experience in the military, first as a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and later as a Naval Commander. This included many sea assignments and significant naval shore assignments, culminating in his current position as provost of the Naval War College.

He earned a Master's of Science in personnel management from the Naval Postgraduate School and holds a Ph.D. in learning technology from Nova-Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The New Jersey Council of County Colleges honored Mary Wall, Atlantic Cape Community College's dean of academic computing and distance education, with the Community College Spirit Award. The Community College Spirit Award is an honor bestowed on those who have helped advance the community college movement. Honorees embody community college spirit, perseverance, dedication, and excellence.

She holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of New Rochelle, N.Y., a master's in student personnel services from Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, Glassboro, N.J., a master's in business administration from Monmouth University, West Long Branch, N.J., and a doctorate in computer technology in education from Nova-Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Patricia A. Lynott has been appointed dean of adult programs and academic partnerships at Elmhurst College in Illinois. Prior to her appointment, Lynott served Elmhurst as an associate professor of communication arts and sciences.

In this position she will also reach out to external constituencies to continue building Elmhurst's corporate-academic partnership program.

A member of the President's Council at Elmhurst College, Lynott earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication at Trinity College. She also has a Master of Arts degree in studies from Northern Illinois University and a Master of Arts degree in communication studies from Northern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Loyola University of Chicago.

Paul R. Corts, president of Palm Beach Atlantic College, West Palm Beach, Fla., is the new chair of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida. Corts was elected to the position by members of the ICUF Presidents Council.

ICUF is an organization representing 26 nonprofit, independent Florida colleges and universities accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. One of ICUF's major responsibilities is representing the interests of the independent colleges and universities in the legislature. Corts has served as president of Palm Beach Atlantic College since 1991. Recently, Corts was elected president of the American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities.
