Michigan Technological University in Houghton is offering Sun MicroSystems, Inc.'s new Sun Ray appliance to students living in its residence halls. The new system makes it possible for students and other members of the Michigan Tech community to access their computer files and applications with ease from virtually anywhere on campus.
Sun Ray terminals located across campus, including dorm rooms, are linked directly to a number of department servers. Students can access their work, including their home directories, from these Sun Ray servers. To access their files, a student can go to a Sun Ray terminal on campus, insert their Tech Express student ID card into the attached Sun Ray thin client (a piece of hardware about the size of a hard-bound book), and type in their password. `All their work and software programs will be immediately available.
