Red Hat Inc., a provider of open source solutions for Internet infrastructure, has created the Red Hat University Program, a global program designed to use Red Hat's comprehensive resources to accelerate the use of open source solutions in the educational environment.

Under the direction of the University Program, an initial donation of $350,000 in open source software and tools, including GNU Pro Dev Kits and Code Fusion packages, has been made to the following universities: California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Georgetown University, University of Alberta, University of California at San Diego, University of Chicago, University of North Carolina, University of Washington, and the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo, both in Canada.

The Red Hat University Program is designed to help universities build out their Internet infrastructure with open source and expand universities' teaching and development resources.

Blackboard Inc., an Internet infrastructure company for e-learning that serves more than 3,300 colleges, schools, and other education institutions, has launched a new multichannel Blackboard.com, a comprehensive e-learning Web site with three channels providing customizable, subject-specific academic resources; global, interactive communities for students and instructors; and Blackboard's online course creation capability.

Anyone with Web connection can access the new Blackboard.com by going directly to http://www. blackboard.com The site is also integrated into Blackboard 5, the company's software platform.

Macromedia, Inc., a provider of solutions for effective Web sites, has introduced three new purchasing programs it says are designed to make it easier and more cost-effective for schools to acquire products, onsite training, and support.

The new offerings are the Macromedia Online Store, the Premier Education Partnership Program, and the Education Volume License Program. All three complement the Web Design 101 program, which offers teachers professionally designed curriculum and trial versions of Macromedia software so they can teach professional Web design skills to their students.
