Richard Culling uses rich colors to bring life to Detroit's urban landscape. His images capture everyday scenes, focusing on architecture and people.
"My most recent work consists of topographical imagery, concerned primarily with architecture within the immediate environment," said Culling. "My images typically evolve from my own cityscape photography. I usually start with the photograph and then do a colorshift."
Culling received a bachelor's degree in painting from Detroit's Wayne State University and a master's degree in painting from the University of Michigan's School of Art. He has received several awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Award for Painting. His exhibitions have been held throughout Michigan and Illinois and his work is held in several private collections.
Culling is currently a professor at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, where he teaches watercolor courses. He resides the Detroit area, and can be reached at (734) 464-0395.
