LeRoy Neiman exhibition held

Art Business News, Nov, 2003

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Through the month of November, Timothy Yarger Fine Art is holding a retrospective exhibition of the work of artist LeRoy Neiman.

The opening reception, held in October, celebrated the release of "LeRoy Neiman: Five Decades," a comprehensive volume of the artist's work featuring 345 full-color illustrations, and the start of the filming of his biography.

Neiman uses markers, conte crayons and ink or watercolors to document numerous scenes, from diners at a famous restaurant to the excitement at a casino; the frenzy of the stock market to a celebrity working a crowd. But he is perhaps best known for his portrayals of sports legends and sporting events. He has painted such illustrious athletes as Joe DiMaggio, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Byrd, and, more recently, Tiger Woods, Mark McGuire and Shaquille O'Neal. Neiman was also appointed official artist of the Olympics five times and has documented Super Bowls, major golf tournaments, horse races and prize fights. His work has been displayed in the baseball, basketball, football, boxing and tennis halls of fame.

Neiman's paintings and drawings are in more than 40 museums around the world, including the Smithsonian, the Chicago Art Institute and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia.
