Celebrating North Carolina Pottery traditions featured in special exhibition

Art Business News,  Dec, 2005

'The Potter's Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery," is on display through March 19 at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

The exhibition features the work of six living North Carolina potters in addition to masterpieces from the 19th century. Co-curated by potters Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy and museum staff member George Holt, the selections highlight contemporary works while demonstrating historic and aesthetic linkages with early works from Europe, Asia and America.

"This exhibition is significant for the state of North Carolina and for the renowned North Caroling pottery tradition," says Lawrence J. Wheeler, museum director. "The Potters Eye" recognizes North Carolina pottery as a rich and respected art from that has been flourishing here for two centuries." (The North Carolina folk pottery is traceable to the mid-18th century.)

The Potters Eye is accompanied by the exhibition catalogue, "The Potters Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery," by Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy, and published for the museum by UNC Press. The book will be available in rail 2006.
