Christie's and Sotheby's proved that Italian art is still molto popolare when the two auction houses held sales of 20th-century Italian art in London last month. Highlights included Christie's sale of artist Pino Pascall's wood, rubber and scrap metal "Mobile Canon" for a record-breaking $2.6 million.
Pascall made the piece in the mid-1960s to explore the pointlessness of military posturing. It is seen as an important work in the history of the Arte Povera artistic movement. According to The Art Newspaper.Com, Christie's managed to sell almost $11 million of Italian art--a new record--during the sale. Combined with Sotheby's, the two auction houses sold more than $23 million in Italian art. ABN
