Tracing career of 1960s pop artist icon

Art Business News, Jan, 2005

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents "Roy Lichtenstein: All About Art," on view through Feb. 22, featuring more than 65 paintings and drawings. Lichtenstein was best known as a Pop artist in the 1960s, when his signature style of bringing the look and feel of commercial printing--particularly comic books and advertising--to fine art, gained a following. The exhibit also traces the artist's fascination with the act of art-making over his nearly 40-year career.

"SFMOMA has long had a special affinity for the work of Roy Lichtenstein and other Pop artists" says Madeleine Grynsztejn, senior curator of painting and sculpture. "We are proud to offer our community its first in-depth look at this well-known artist."

The exhibit consists of a thorough selection of his works, including Lichtenstein's earlier works with cartoon imagery ("Look Mickey" 1961); monochrome paintings of domestic scenes ("Washing Machine," 1961); classic war and romance images ("Kiss V," 1962); Impressionist and Abstract works ("Yellow Brushstroke I" 1965); landscapes ("Sussex" 1964); and still lifes ("Still Life with Glass and Peeled Lemon," 1972).
