Beat photographs by musician John Cohen on view in Georgia

Art Business News, Feb, 2003

The photography of musician John Cohen is currently on view in the exhibit, "There is No Eye: Photographs by John Cohen," at the Georgia Museum of Art.

The exhibition features about 120 photographs covering many areas of Cohen's work, including New York in the 1950s, American music, the Beats and his later travels in Peru and the American South. Also included are portraits of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Franz Kline, Woody Guthrie and Doc Watson.

Born in 1932 in New York City and a graduate of the Yale School of Fine Arts, Cohen joined the Beats, Abstract Expressionists and other artists and musicians in the emerging art scene in New York. In 1958, Cohen co-founded the New Lost City Ramblers, which significantly influenced the folk music revival of the 1960s. Best known for his music, he was deeply involved in photography and film-making and served as documentation of 1960s cultural history.

"There is No Eye: Photographs by John Cohen" is on view in conjunction with the exhibit/Visualizing the Blues: Images of the American South 1862-1999," on view at the museum through March 23.
