Art Business News, March, 2001 by Emmett Murphy
NEW YORK--On Dec. 5, Doyle New York featured an auction of important American paintings and sculpture that offered a variety of still lifes, portraits, landscapes, seascapes and genre scenes. A marine painting by James Edward Buttersworth (British/American, 1817-1894) sold for a surprising $135,750, which helped push the sale total to more than $1 million.
According to Alan Fausel, Doyle New York's director of Paintings and Drawings, "Buttersworth's paintings are noted for their fine detail, accuracy and wonderful sky treatments. The pair of paintings offered in the sale were new to the market and have not been seen in many years. "As a result, his "Shipping Off Shore" sailed past an estimate of $25,000 to 35,000, to sell for $135,750.
