Christie's New York

Art Business News, March, 2003 by Vanessa Silberman

Fast on the heels of the Outsider Art Fair, Christie's New York held the first major auction devoted to self-taught and outsider art on Jan. 27. 94 of the 121 lots sold, bringing in $1.15 million. Many auction world records were set, including Martin Ramirez's "Alamentosa," which sold for $95,600 (est.

$55,000 to $80,000), and a Henry Darger drawing, which sold for $89,625 (est. $50,000-$70,000). However, the highly anticipated top lot in the sale, William Edmondson's "Untitled (Ark)", (est. $400,000 to $600,000) failed to find a buyer.
