SURTEX back for 17th-edition show - Show news - Brief Article

Art Business News,  May, 2002

NEW YORK--Design trends driving the future of a wide range of industries may be previewed at SURTEX 2002, where two-dimensional art and design is available for sale and/or license for application to a wide range of products, from fabric and home fashions to stationery, ceramics and packaging. The 17th-annual edition of the show will take place from May 19 to 21 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Show officials anticipate that more than 5,000 trade attendees will visit 320 exhibitors. "SURTEX has become a key global resource for a vast array of manufacturing sectors sourcing art and design for multi-dimensional uses. Rug manufacturers, home fashion companies, greeting card producers, toy manufacturers and even the automotive industry are just a few of the many sectors which have come to rely on SURTEX offerings for all of their art and design needs," said Penny Sikalis, vice president and show manager.

A special highlight of the show for 2002 with be the "A Tribute to New York: SURTEX Art Exhibit," which presents a display of contributed works from SURTEX exhibitors, reflective of the overwhelming global support and solidarity that New York has experienced in the aftermath of Sept. 11. A gallery of the submissions will be featured at the Javits Center throughout the show, with plans for select designs, chosen by a committee of industry professionals, to be reproduced on Avanti greeting cards. The cards will then be sold at the show to raise funds for the Twin Towers Fund to benefit the families of fallen members of New York City's rescue agencies.

SURTEX is held concurrently with three other trade shows, which show officials said offers synergistic cross-marketing opportunities for exhibitors and attendees alike. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair presents the latest trends in furniture, lighting, textiles, wall/floor coverings and decorative accessories; the National Stationery Show offers social stationery and related products for domestic and international specialty and high-volume retailers; and the Supply Side, a business-to-business event, showcases resources for the social stationery, giftware and graphic arts industries.

SURTEX will also feature a conference program addressing current issues in the art licensing and surface design industries.
