Perpetual motion: Kirk Newman's frantic figures reflect his artistic theory of evolution

Art Business News, May, 2004 by Jenny Sherman

It seems that the only constant in Newman's ever-adapting repertoire will be his depiction of the bustling businessperson. "I can take the same subject and make it better," he said. "I think that's what great artists do. Rembrandt kept coming back to the same subject [in his self-portraits]. It's a magical experience to stand in front of older Rembrandts and compare them to his later portraits--unexplainable magic." Although Newman's figures are still subject to the inevitable laws of change, he knows that, in this case, change is good.
