Art Business News, June, 2001
IRVINE, Calif.--Linda Jones Clough recently announced that her company has approved and implemented the use of an original signature mark on all art that would formerly have been hand-signed by her father, legendary animation director and creator, Chuck Jones.
The SigTech signature equipment, manufactured by Automated Signature Technology of Sterling, Va., was selected to apply the original signature mark.
"Chuck Jones, 88, has generously signed his name as our most revered authenticity mark well more than 150,000 times," said Clough. "Collectors have become as accustomed to looking for that mark as they have for the seal and certificate of authenticity. Although he has decided to utilize his time drawing and painting, rather than signing limited editions and production art, my father has enthusiastically endorsed the decision to use a machine-written version of his original signature as a continuing authenticity mark."
Clough continued, "This mark, in fact, is his personal signature, which he personally selected from a variety of choices. It will, of course, be utilized under the strictest security measures, leaving no possibility of mishandling. Each `automated original signature mark' will be individually `written' on the art under my supervision. Each original mark will be applied with the appropriate instrument, whether it is a felt-tipped marker, pencil, charcoal, ballpoint pen or other writing instrument. The seal of authenticity will reflect the fact that this is a certified mark and not a hand-signed piece. In addition, art marked in this way will be hand crimped, outside the visual area, in order to assure permanency, as well as obviating misunderstanding or misrepresentation."
Linda Jones Enterprises has introduced and utilized several certifying procedures to assure collectors of the authenticity of the art from LJE. Among innovations was a comprehensive authenticity certificate that met the legal standard of verification and use of color printing techniques for replication difficulty. In addition, LJE introduced a seal that incorporated hologram technology and number identification.
Linda Jones Enterprises, in addition to publishing and distributing the artwork of Chuck Jones, owns and operates retail galleries in Laguna Beach and San Diego, Calif., as well as Santa Fe, N.M.
