Pinault to build new Venice art venue
Art Business News, June, 2007
ROME -- Art mogul and French billionaire Francois Pinault plans to convert the 17th century Punta della Dogana, a landmark customs house in Venice, into a $26.69-million art venue.
Pinault had been battling for the opportunity against the Guggenheim Foundation, which had also submitted plans to convert the Renaissance warehouse into an art venue. The city hall of Venice announced it would work exclusively with Pinault in early April.
Pinault is the owner of Christie's auction house and founder of the PPR retail empire that includes Gucci. The new space is expected to be inaugurated in 2009.
