Joshua Smith: winner of Artexpo New York 2007 solo award for painting

Joshua Smith was born in 1973 in New Bedford, Mass. At age 6, his family moved to Oakland, Calif., to open an interior design firm. Relocating to Orange County in 1996, Smith received his BFA in Painting from the Laguna School of Art and Design, and then went on to receive his MFA in Painting at the Hartford Art School, studying under Stephen Brown and Scott Prior. Smith now lives in Farmington, Conn., with his wife, Jackie, and children, Nathan and Nicole.

Artist Statement:

"My paintings are a visual representation of the physical and spiritual challenges, hopes and victories of life. They are personal psalms in meditation and contemplation with the creator. The structures and figures in landscapes are metaphors that provide visual clarity or diffusion for subjects of emotion or spirit, which are intangible. My paintings in oil are created with many thick and thin layers of paint, medium, and solvents, applied with various opaque painting and glazing methods."
