Art Business News, July, 2003 by Vanessa Silberman

* Las Vegas casino tycoon Steve Wynn spent more than $45 million in less than 24 hours at the spring Impressionist and Modern art auctions in New York, sweeping the top lots at both Christie's and Sotheby's sales. At Sotheby's, he walked away with Renoir's "Dans les roses" (1882), which was estimated between $20 to $30 million and went for $23.5 million.

At Christie's, Wynn bought a self portrait by Cezanne, dating from about 1895 and one of the last self-portraits he painted. Estimated between $15 to $20 million, Wynn paid $17.3 million for the work. Both paintings are for his art collection in Las Vegas and will be displayed at his new casino, Le Reve.
