Exhibit features sculpted florals

Art Business News, July, 2004

Elegant florals are frozen in time in the crystallized art of world-renowned glass artist, Paul Stankard. The Museum of Arts & Design will exhibit 75 pieces of Stankard's sculptural glass "Botanicals" from May 28 through August 29. The exhibit, titled "Paul Stankard: A Floating World," focuses on Stankard's interpretation of nature in floral glass paperweights. These works highlight his 40-year career, and include early experimental works to recent pieces.

Stankard marries traditional glass floral artistry from Victorian times with scientifically correct flowers and insects. His paperweights depart from the traditional spherical shape into a block, creating a sculptural form. A closer look at his work reveals small words and images woven through the florals, as seen in medieval herbal illustrations, truly emphasizing craft and art.
