Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedInphase's holographic storage solution
Post, Nov, 2004 by Marc Loftus
LONGMONT, CO -- InPhase Technologies (www.inphasetech.com), which is developing holographic storage technology, is introducing a prototype media and drive that will first be made available to its development partners. Initial media cartridges look similar to DVDs and optical discs, but are made up of a proprietary material that can currently store 200GB of information.
Company VP of marketing, Liz Murphy, reports that a number of media manufacturers have signed on to create the holographic write-once discs that will be used. While 200GB is the initial capacity of the discs that will be manufactured, the media's material has enough sensitivity to some day store 17TB of information.

For the drive, Murphy adds that vendors are also in place to produce the unit's optical mechanical assembly, spatial light modulator, lens, laser and drive mechanism.
They expect the shipping product will offer 20MB/second read/write performance. Murphy says that InPhase is already working on a package that would include a drive and 2TB of media for $5K.
