LONDON -- Online approval, the long-hoped-for solution to the problem of bringing clients and post people together across distances to allow them to review works in progress, takes another step toward reality with a new system from SALT Media Software Consultants called, simply, Approvals. Approvals enables the clients of post and VFX studios to download, annotate and search their content securely via a user interface designed to be simple for both the clients and the technical staff to use.

The idea is that the secure publishing of work-in-progress clips from any workstation within a post house or visual effects studio will become part of the day-to-day workflow. "Post production companies need straightforward ways to offer everyone involved in a project remote access to work-in-progress and their back catalogue," says Tom Houlbrooke, a director of SALT (www.s-a-t.co.uk). "Approvals provides an 'out of the box' client approvals and archive system which can be branded for the post production company and optionally for the client."
SALT provides customization consultancy and an optional managed hosting service for the content at www.approvals.tv in addition to being able to fully integrate the service into a Web site. Specialized VTR control and encoding solutions are also available.
Approvals is available with additional modules, combined with custom engineering, to provide dub and play-out ordering services, thus generating additional revenue for the post company.
