SAN FRANCISCO -- Dolby has acquired the assets of DemoGraFX (www.demografx.com), a developer of specialized digital video signal processing and image coding technology. The technology team will operate out of Dolby's Burbank office and brings with it broad experience in image compression, filtering, format conversion, computer graphics and software modeling, among other things. Dolby's Tom Daily says it will be some time before we will see developments from the acquisition.

Dolby (www.dolby.com) has also upgraded its DP563 surround encoder to support the five-channel Pro Logic II standard, providing full bandwidth stereo rear channels as opposed to the limited bandwidth mono rears presented with the Pro Logic format New units will cost $3,700 and will be able to encode content in both the Pro Logic and Pro Logic II formats. Existing units can be upgraded to support Pro Logic II for $400, Dolby's DP564 decoder already supports Pro Logic II.
