DreamWorks' completes move to Linux with HP - Post News - Hewlett-Packard Co., Alias/Wavefront INc - Brief Article

Post, July, 2002 by Matthew Armstrong

PALO ALTO, CA--To take advantage of commodity software and the growing processing power of the PC, DreamWorks has moved to desktop applications for animation, completing its latest film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron entirely in Linux on HP workstations.

The primary animation of characters were drawn in traditional cel animation, then digitized and set in motion with DreamWorks' proprietary 2D animation Software, ToonShooter, which allows animators to playback the hand-drawn artwork in real-time with other visual effects and sync sound.

Alias\Wavefront's Maya was used for creating a large amount of the 3D environments and integrating 2D and 3D elements.

DreamWorks has seven animated films in various levels of productions. Next spring, it will release Sin-bad, featuring the voices of Brad Pitt, Michelle Pfeifer and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
