Discreet showing Max 5 at SIGGRAPH - Post News - Discreet Logic Inc - Brief Article

Post, July, 2002

MONTREAL -- Discreet's biggest news announcement for this year's SIGGRAPH show in San Antonio centers around its 3DS Max animation, modeling and rendering software. Version 5 is designed to offer animators and artists better control over the creation, animation and management of animated characters.

The new release also includes new floating licensing options, Spline IK, a Dope Sheet Editor and a new character-based animation management system. New advanced rendering features for 3DS Max include radiosity, Toon Shading, Area Light Shadows and a method for simulating high-resolution scenes on low-resolution geometry. At the show, Discreet also introduces Character Studio 4, an extension to 3DS Max software that provides control for building and refining characters.

Discreet also debuts the company's flagship 3D Web design software Plasma, which leverages the functionality of 3DS Max while using a Web designer's user interface and an extended toolset, including integration with Macromedia's Shockwave and Flash.

The company's recently announced releases of Flame and Flint 8 systems and Inferno 5 will be demo'd at SIGGRAPH as well. New functionality features include mixed resolution support, new timeline editing, a unified animation channel, support for Kaydara's FBX file format and numerous user-requested enhancements.

And Combustion 2, the Macintosh- and Windows-based desktop software solution for compositing, paint and animation will be on display.
