Nonlinear access to digital dailies - Post News - Brief Article

Post, August, 2002

NEWYORK--A digital dailies solution allowing the nonlinear access to dailies and attached metadata for HD acquired content is now available through rental house Plus 8 Video (www.plus8video.com), technology consultant Cohen Communications (www.cohencomm.com), video compression provider Heuris (www.heuris.com) and production management solutions provider Mindstar Productions (www.mindstarprods.com).

Cohen Communications' and Heuris' digital dailies solution allows HD video to be viewed as an MPEG-2 file on a PC. The system also incorporates an enhanced version of Mindstar Productions' Cinergy Motion Picture Production System on-set module (MPPS).The Cinergy system integrates vital metadata, such as timecode, circled takes, director's comments, into a program used by the on-set script supervisor. This metadata is available immediately to the editor. This complete system was first used on the set of the feature film The Human Stain.

Plus 8 Video will package the Cinergy MPPS software with camera packages as well as a Facilities HD Encoder Package that uses metadata from the set to batch digitize clips. The system will also support film-acquired content by importing a telecine-produced ALE file and encoding the negative telecine master to an MPEG-2 file. The Facilities HD Encoder package includes an HD MPEG-2 encoder and a PC capture station that creates files on DVD-PAM, FireWire or USB drives. These files are read by Enhanced iDVR systems which use the metadata captured on set by to playback modified playlists (circled takes).
