Pre-selling effectively on the Web
It is a breath of fresh air that the Hand-Me-Down Heartache and Sorority Sisters author features her next book, The Night Before Thirty (Villard, May 2003, $21.95, ISBN 1-400-06020-6) on its own page, complete with description and an image of the book jacket. (The most irritating things about author Websites are the frequent lack of a "coming soon" call-out to promote an upcoming book and being able to find more information at Amazon.com than the author's own site.)
You can even pre-order Butler's forthcoming book. At the top of the "Purchase Books" page are links to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, Blackexpressions.com and Cushcity.com.
In addition to the sale of her books, Ms. Butler offers readers her biography, upcoming events, reviews and articles.
This is one of the cleaner author sites on the Web: The navigation is simple and concentrated on the left; the flash on the homepage attracts rather than irritates the eye; and the background is a crisp and clear white. There isn't any music, pop-up windows or a hodgepodge of content in the middle of the page that you don't understand. You won't get lost in any clutter here: on this site the clickin' is easy.
