New arts requirements for California universities - Arts Update - Brief Article

Arts & Activities,  Feb, 2002

Starting in 2003, to be considered for admission to the UC or CSU, students must have completed one year of college preparatory coursework certified in the visual and performing arts. Grades in art courses will then be calculated in students' grade point averages. To be certified, a course in the visual arts must be one year in duration, require work outside of class, and meet the California Department of Visual and Performing Arts Standards.

It is hoped that through these experiences, students will value the arts in their education and understand that the UC/CSU campus to which they may be applying values the arts as well. For a copy of the Visual Arts Standards adopted by the California State Board of Education, visit www.cde.ca.gov/shsd/arts.
