AFRICAN-AMERICAN VISUAL ARTISTS: An Annotated Bibliography of Educational Resource Materials (2001; $45), by Daniel J. Frye. Scarecrow Press, Inc., 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, MD 20706.

Secondary school libraries would find this a useful reference. It lists and annotates 1,174 individual African American artists. The book begins with an essay: "African American Art ... A contextual survey that points to the continual exclusion of African Americans in general art texts." Clearly this is a publication that seeks to reduce this imbalance. The essay's bibliography is an excellent one. The Annotated Bibliography includes such categories as: Children's Books, Artists, and Artist Groups and Movements. All of this is followed by Source Lists: Art Museums and Galleries, Audiovisual Sources, Book Publishers, Book Stores, Collections, Historical and Research Centers, and Journals.-J.J.H.
