Musee d'Orsay. . - Reviews: A-V/Visual/CD-ROM - video recording review

Arts & Activities,  Feb, 2002  by Barbara Herberholz

MUSEE D'ORSAY. Video/60 min./$29.95. Level: High School and Adult. Crystal Productions, P.O. Box 2159, Glenview, IL 60025, (800) 255-8629.

This video highlights the extensive collection of Western art that is housed in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Since its opening in 1986, France's national museum has displayed art garnered from three main institutions: From the Louvre came works by artists born after 1820; from the Jeu de Paume Museum, works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists such as Monet, Cezanne, van Gogh, Seurat and others; and from the National d'Art Moderne Museum came works by artists born after 1870. The artworks are shown in chronological order, including the artist's name and the work's title. A brief description introduces viewers to each artwork and to the artist who created it. Also shown are sculpture, photography, objects of art and architecture. All in all, viewers will gain an overview of European art from 1848 to about 1900--the next best thing to touring the museum yourself.-B.H.
